Road Re named Alan Chesters Way

07 July 2017

The road leading up to the Barr Hill Clubhouse has had the new signage put in place for our former Life President Mr Alan Chesters MBE. Barr Hill JFC & the Chesters family are very proud that Alan has been paid such a fitting tribute to mark his time spent with the club and what he achieved within the years he spent at Barr Hill.

Alan was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to football.

Alan Chesters, from Irlams o’ th’ Height, founded the junior wing of Barrhill Lads Football Club and worked as a volunteer with young players for more than 50 years.

Alan, who was still involved in club coaching in his early 70s, was life president at the Irlams O’ Th’ Height-based club and was presented with an MBE in 1996.

He received an Unsung Hero of the North West Award from Bobby Charlton in the same year, and, in 1998, a medal by the Football Association for 50 years’ voluntary services to football.

Sports stars tutored by Alan as youngsters include former Manchester City and Republic of Irelend player Terry Phelan and former light middleweight boxing champion Jamie Moore
